Get into the automotive industry. I'm in software on the manufacturing/production side of the business, and it's fast paced and always changing. The guys in the plants are always juggling many projects, insane deadlines, and big responsibilities. My background is Toyota. The big 3 may be a huge drag, I don't know. My experience is that it can be high stress, fun, pretty good pay (but I'm currently getting screwed), and rewarding. It's neat at the end of a day knowing that what you did one reason cars are popping off the end of the line. Or walking into a showroom and pointing to parts of the car that you were responsible for. It's also fun listening to car salesmen spew total falsehoods about the car, and then schooling them.
That's my experience. There is no way I have the patience to deal with kids, though. I'd be a horrible teacher.
