My wife is a teacher and I'm an engineer so I MAY have some useful input. Each of us thinks the other works way too hard. This is probably because we both love our chosen career paths.
Engineering can be Zombie-land but only if you allow it to. Perhaps this isn't the correct economy for it but startups usually have a much smaller group of much better individuals who can make the job more challenging and more fun as well. I know this is a gross over-generalization but it's what I've seen. In the past I've disliked the more cushy jobs working for large companies.
Teaching has its merits but you really have to have the patience and understanding. One example is that sometimes you have to put up with kids who don't want to learn and parents who want to make excuses for them, etc. You also need to be able to keep things interesting/challenging enough that they continue thinking about or applying what you're teaching them outside of school. This is very difficult to do. My wife somehow gets this done. Each year, she receives letters from several of her former students who are now in college and appreciate what she taught them. That's gold to her. Speaking of gold, you'll need to live on less money because, for some strange reason, our society puts a smaller monetary value on teaching in relation to other career choices. My hat is off to you if you feel that you can and want to do it. We need many more good teachers than exist today.
