Thanks. I had not heard of Teach For America so I read the FAQ on their website. As I suspected they have not figured out how to bypass the certification requirement. If there really is a shortage, and if school districts really do desire to hire qualified people coming out of successful nonteaching careers, then something is going to have be done to break the certification stranglehold of the NEA and the school beauraucrats.
Two years ago in my state, the legislature, at the governor's request, enacted legislation to allow alternate routes to teacher certification. Of course the state NEA and the Superintendent of Public Education advised the legislature. The result: "alternative" paths to certification that are even more onerous than the one-year, full-time, masters in teaching programs that all the colleges have now! So much for reform.
Just my $.02, cynical though it may be.
