Yes, there are engineering jobs that suck, just like any other profession. That's why they call it 'work'. I've been in R&D for 21 years and the wide variety of different projects keeps it interesting for me. But there are boring projects, too. There's also downsizing or whatever they call it this week. I hope you've already thought real hard about changing careers, so I'm not going to talk you out of it now. Just make sure you enjoy it.
Lots of people moan about the poor quality of math & science education in this country, this may be your chance to do something about it. There are apparently too many science teachers who are either boring or don't have much science education or background. That's probably why lots of cities NEED science teachers (Like Dr.Eric said).
Most of my boring teachers were in economics or history. Maybe that's why I turned out this way.
Don't let yourself get bored in the classroom (yes its up to you), 'cause then that will be the biggest message the kids will remember. You also need the right personality to keep students interested in science. It seems like nobody wants to be a nerd, so its not cool to get good grades in science... That's gotta stop if we don't want to become a 3rd world country.
Get in touch with ASME. There's probably a student section there, or check http://www.asme.org as well as other professional organizations like SAE or IEEE or ASM etc... I know ASME & SAE have programs aimed at schools. I worked with 4th graders for a couple years in an SAE program called World In Motion. It was really fun. I think having a grade school, middle school, or high school science teacher who has 80% of an engineering education would be an incredible bonus.
