I did alot of research before I got my 2001 aero. What I found is that saab has been making turbo 4cyl engines for a long time and are among the best at it. I am one of those who believes that turbo 4cylinder engines is at the heart of a true saab. It is what saab does best, they have experience with turbo 4 and it is part of the saab philosophy because of the power characteristics, lightness, and compactness compared to bigger engines. Thus giving a car the size of the 9-5 a unusually light and agile feel with great power and fuel efficiency. Turbos can go bad and need replacing; no different from other parts. Not too expensive, and at least it has a timing chain instead of a belt that should last the life of the engine. Saab and 6 cyl eng has not been a great combo so far. Maybe later
