A few points to be fair to the V6. Acording to the specs found in the "Model Info" section of this site, the 4 cyl Aero engine is not necessarily more efficient that the V6. Both need to be paired up with the auto tranny for a fair comparisson. For 2000 models, the V6 was actually more efficient, and for 2001 they are the same! Here are the numbers for both the Aero and SE/Arc with automatic. Its surprising to see such a big improvement for the Aero in 2002.
Aero SE/Arc
2000 18/24 18/26
2001 19/26 19/26
2002 20/30 18/26
Another comment about comparing the Saab V6 to other V6 engines is that the turbo provides the benefit of a broader, flatter torque curve. Thus despite the relatively low 200 HP rating, real-world performance should be more competitive with some of the other V6s mentioned by Aeroking.
Now after standing up for the Saab V6, I'd still say that IMHO it does leave a lot to be desired. It lacks the refinement, power, and efficiency of some of the better V6's on the market. If Saab could take something like the Acrua 3.2 TL engine and add it's turbo magic, I'd probably be in heaven. I really like the powertrain in the TL, but not the rest of the car. There is something to be said for smooth, quiet power delivery. Saab doesn't do too well in this category with either the 4 or 6.
