First it is GM sourced, GM is not a leader in engine technology not to mention spotty quality reputation etc. Second Saab as little experience with V6 engines as compared to 4 cylinder engines. Third, the v6 is heavier and makes the 9-5 more nose heavy and effects handling and feel. It is less fuel efficient, and has no power advantage over the Aero engine.
It uses a timing belt which has to be changed and are generally less durable than timing chains. The 4 cylinder Saab uses has set endurance records, and has been under Saab developement for years and years. Plus in my opinion, the only reason Saab ever introduced a V6 is for marketing reasons. All the competition use sixes, the consumer expects sixes at this price range and so on. However given the state of developement of the Turbo 4, there is no technical reason for the V6. Sixes may sound better and may be a bit smoother. The Saab 4 is a proven engine.
