Your temp gauge should give a fairly accurate indication of relative coolant temperatures, unlike newer models with the gauges being influenced by the EDU computer and thus falsely reporting these relationships.
Is it possible that increasing ambient temps might be the cause? Have your driving habits changed, like from suburban to city, etc.? If the thermostat is influencing the temperature, I would think it could only do so by becoming partially stuck closed, thus reducing flow. But since you just changed it and are using BL, which should prolong the life of the 'stat and the water pump seal, I would think this is not the problem.
I've never had a problem with a thermostat in any of my five Saabs (knocking firmly on synthetic wood hutch), which may be some sore of a world record. YMMV.
To access the gauge's behavior, I'd think you'd have to do so under identical conditions. Are you comparing its behavior now with last year at this time or last Spring? Anyway, knowing how BL works, I can't imagine a scenario where it would be a factor.
