especially for the price (including lease price) at which it was offered. It was probably better than any LandRover in terms of reliablity, technology, fit/finish, ride quality or style . . . except for perhaps wheel articulation, which never really matters for the way those $40k+ SUV's are used.

The fundamental problem with 9-7 was its lack of snob appeal due to Trailblazer under-pinning (which btw was much more modern than most LandRover platforms being offered at the time). Its being the butt of a joke by some commentator is more of a reflection on the commentators than on the vehicle per se. By Saab standards, 9-7 was a commercial success, no less than 9000 or 9-5 or 9-3 on an annualized basis, all of which shared platform with more plebian cars from major carmakers. If not for the fact that I had already bought an SUV from Toyota/Lexus to supplement our 9-5 the year before it came out, we may well have bought a 9-7.
