If a completely new line in a carmaker shares a lot with an existing line, that would only mean the new line is competing against existing products. The 9-7x had far more commonality with 9-5 (both had GM platforms and both had GM transmissions, and eventually both had GM engines) than Cayenne had with any existing Porsche product at the time of its introduction, except for arguably 911, which had its origin in sharing parts with with the original VW Beetle.

Where 9-7x failed was in lacking sufficient snob appeal . . . which like I said is more reflection on the person (the refuseniks) than the vehicle itself.
