The columnist in question (who I know you don't like) discussed how his parents bought Saabs from the 70's though the early 90's but then switched to Subarus. On the 9-2 he said "it came closer to the kind of car Saab should have be selling than anything the company (GM) had come up with." And I agree, there seems to be a lot of synergy or something between Saab and Subaru. I know I like my Outback 3.0. I've not driven a 9-2 but my guess is that the few things I didn't like about the WRX (I really hate cloth seats) might well have been addressed by it's Saabification.
I was selling Subarus when the WRX came out. When the first one arrived at our dealership it wasn't off the truck five minutes when I grabbed it and headed for the highway. As luck would have it I ended up at a stoplight next to a IROC Camaro. I gave the guy a little throttle blip--bear in mind that at the time very few people knew what a WRX was. You should have seen the look on his face when I smoked him with ease (without slamming gears--it was new and not mine). Geberally I'n not a fan of badge engineering but that was an interesting combination of marks.
