Let's face it - all cars need maintenance. There are some facets of the
9000 that are easier to deal with than the 900 and vice versa. But, the
9000 is a newer and more refined design. For example, brake pads: I
used to swear every time I had to use one of those piston turning tools
on the 900 front brakes - what a RPITA! - don't need it on the 9000.
Changing spark plugs is much easier on the 9000, not that it's hard on
the 900, though. Relative to workin' on other vehicles and the 900, I would say the 9000 is easier and as easy, respectively. The DI is only
a problem if the plugs aren't changed regularly, and the gap is allowed
to widen. Change the plugs every 12k (they're less than $8 for four)
and there is no problem with the DI. The '93 model year was the first
year (in the US) that the CS body style was sold. There are no newer
versions of the 9000 - only older (CC - combi' coupe). Do all you can
to convince your dad to give up the ghost! Older people get very comfortable w/old things and find it very difficult to change. Tell him
to not to listen only to his mechanic, but at least listen to good arguments on the other side, then make a decision. I consider the 9000
to be one of the best family sedans ever built, anywhere, anytime - that
includes the 9^3 or 9^5. Let him ride/drive a CSE for an extended highway
trip then report back to us and let us know what he thinks about the 9000.
Don't let him try an Aero, though - you might never see it again!
