tim

i bought a quite clean 92 9000T Talladega Red (best color) 5spd with 121k miles for $4900 back in Nov of 2000.

here's a breakdown and cost on what i've done in the ensuing year and a half i've put 27k miles on it.(mostly DIY and my friend is the owner of an indy Saab garage so parts were mostly cost AND i had access to a TECH2):
120k service $70 diy
rear calipers $180 diy
exhaust $150 diy
clutch $300 diy
TCS (throttle body and check valve) $1098
SRS sensor $80 diy
heater core $100 diy
timing chain/balance shafts $300 diy
head gasket $80 diy
crankshaft pulley $280
fan switch/relay $30 diy
cd player repair $85

still needs:
AC compressor (currently disconnected but somewhere between 300-500 to fix)

from a driver's standpoint, it's a hard to beat combination of speed, comfort and utility. it's a joy to drive and IMO hands down better than the 900 (for all the reasons you mentioned- wickedly faster, roomier and more refined).

was it cheaper to run than my 900T's? i'm not sure- i remember my 87 900T and 91 900T SE nickel and dimeing me to death. although it seems as if 9000's have bigger ticket electronic/computer items that when fail cost $$$ like the TCS on my car (even though i had been forewarned, $1098 was still a kick in the gut... and it left me stranded).

if i didn't have access to a garage and parts at or near cost, i probably would NOT have been happy with my purchase. and i'm not sure i'd recommend a used 9000 to most of my friends- 9000's and Saabs in general seem to require someone with... let's say, discriminating tastes and a willingness/desire for a more involved relationship with their vehicle (good and bad). since you're already a Saab owner, i'd think you'd be quite happy with a 9000. but your dad (especially if he's footing the bills) and mechanic have not unreasonable concerns...

good luck and let us know if you make the jump...
