a four cylinder, find a used Audi A4--they share the same floor pan and mechanicals. And you can get one right now. Personally I'd preferred the V6. I sold VW's and Audis and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen in the Passat. Also, the Audi is nicer looking and definately has an ambiance the VW doesn't. You would be much happier with the part and repair bills on the Subaru though. I can see where your dad is coming from. I started out with air cooled VW's in the early 70's and was dead set against every complicated inovation that came along (including water cooling). And the truth is that none of them ever were as troublesome as I predicted, and I eventially accepted them. Having sold Audis with all wheel drive, variable valve timing, variable intake manifolds, 5 speed automatic tiptronic trans, and the ESP traction/handling program, my reaction was predictable. But that stuff is pretty nice (the ESP is phenominal on ice) and I susupect that sooner or later...
