i've had INFINITELY more problems with my 93 900s with 86000 mi than i've had with my 95 9000 CS with 105,000- on the 900, the radiator, alternator, cooling system, fans, fuels pumps, starter, transmission...sigh. yes, the cars can be tough to work on, and a bit on the pricey side. but getting parts from sponsors here and doing the work yourself saves a lot. plus, i seem to recall reading here (and in my experience it's true) that if you can afford to repair a saab through the 100K mark (when a LOT of things tend to start going) then it'll run pretty smooth for another 100K. the lesson? find a good 9000 (maybe on the classifieds here) that has just over 100,000 on it- if the seller's got all the records, check them out... chances are they've taken care of a lot of the maintenance issues (DI, heater core, radiator, electrical, etc) and you'll be set with a darn good car.
i love my 9000- in fact, the 900 i used to drive is now my sister's, and we're trading for a week while she uses my car to take a week-long b/c we know the 9K will make it... and it has 20,000 more miles than the 900! but i'm dreading the return to the 900... i just like 9000 too much! lol
good luck!
