.. eventually, we'll have to move into the 90's! Actually, we already have with our 91 900S, but it's pseudo-my car (i.e. I drive it) and its the newest in the family! We've also got an 89 900S, an 87 900S, and an 86 Toyota 4Runner (talk about the right vehicle for offroad/beating on/etc). I think it's beginning to dawn on him that we'll have to move up, and my mother (although she refuses to admit it yet) will soon want a car like a Subaru Legacy or Outback--functional, practical all-wheel drive (my father and I will wholeheartedly push for the Passat once they release a version with 4motion that isn't V6 or automatic!!!) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. He's not blind and isn't stodgy/closed-minded as perhaps I've made him seem.
Hopefully I'll be able to present him with all this info that you all have been providing and say, "Look! They're not bad cars--they're really quite good cars! When you buy used, these are things you have to deal with, no matter what car you get!"
Thanks for the help so far--any more opinions on comparative pricing on parts, difficult and common repairs, etc. would still be greatly appreciated from everyone! The more I have in the proverbial arsenal the better.
