"If someone develops a better mousetrap (or battery, or energy source), people will flock to it..."?
Sounds like maybe you spent a little too much time in the lab and not enough in the real world!
History is replete with examples of things being "better" and not being accepted, either quickly or at all.
Pop quiz: what was the best-selling car in the USA in the mid-1970's? Answer: the Ford Pinto. Now, I know this is a bit subjective but what was the worst car you could buy in the USA in the 1970's? In my opinion and that of many others... the Ford Pinto. In this and thousands of other cases, people didn't buy what was better, they bought what was cheap and/or easy.
Here's another example: airbags. GM actually developed them in the 1960's, but they didn't even get marketed until the government forced the issue 20 years later. How about Beta vs. VHS? Beta was better, VHS dominated the marketplace. To keep things a little on-topic, how many people over the years have chosen vehicles other than Saabs even though a Saab would meet their needs better?
And if you're going to try to convince me that we have enough oil to last "centuries" at current rates of consumption, you're going to have to provide convincing documentation from an unbiased peer-reviewed source. Otherwise I'm calling BS on that one.
And re the Volt being sold at a loss and not desirable to most car buyers, how about the Saab 9-5? Saab lost money on every one of those sold, and for each one sold people bought thousands of cars from other manufacturers. But I don't see you giving that car the same criticism...
