But the distinction between the Pinto, Beta vs. VHS, indeed the 9-5, and the Volt and other government-backed stuff is that the market freely chose the former and not the latter, and likewise market forces eventually caused consumers to move on to other things.

I prefer my government to stay out of the business of picking winners and losers. It would be like the government deciding that Windows Phone was the best mobile OS and subsidize it to make it more competitive with iOS and Android.

There are way more examples of new products or new takes on existing products that made it just fine without government intervention than the other way around. Government should serve to create a climate where such things can happen, not actively force the issue. The latter path will lead to plenty more Solyndras, Fiskers, etc.

Doesn't it suck that we're debating the virtue of electric cars and government intervention in free markets instead of sharing our excitement at the future of Saab?
