Hi,

A.K.A hoily war!

Now that even _I_ received my copy of NINES "oil issue", it's high time
for another all out hoily war ... YEE HAH!!!

Alright, let me state my position first and then try to justify it from
what I find in the two oil articles.

Since all 9-5s have turbo engines, I would say that we should use
Mobil 1 or some other fully synthetic motor oil. The two recommended
viscosities of Mobil 1 are 0W-40 and 15W-50. If you have a green engine
like me, it may be advisable to use 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 for the first
50,000 to 60,000 miles until the bearings have worn sufficiently.

The reason for needing fully synthetic oil is that turbo engines
generate a lot of torque and in converting the up-down motion into
rotational motion a lot of energy is lost due to friction. If the wrong
oil is used, this friction may eat away at the bearings instead of
just heating up the engine oil. Fully synthetic motor oil is better
equipped to stand up to high shear conditions because it contains less
viscosity modifiers than mineral oils. Viscosity modifiers are not
able to maintain their protective properties as well as base stock in
the high shear environment of bearings.

The first article by John Lippis recommends XW-50 viscosity for engines
with more than 60,000 miles on the odometer to sufficiently protect
against shock loads on the bearings with greater clearances due
to wear. In the second article, Stephen Goldberger argues that a good
measure of how oil will perform in the high shear environment of the
bearings is HTHS and that ACEA A3 certification should be sought for
maximium HTHS protection.

The only two grades of Mobil 1 (the most commonly available and cheapest
fully synthetic motor oil) which meet ACEA A3 are 0W-40 and 15W-50.

So, please DO use fully synthetic motor oil not just for extended drain
interval but because they provide better protection in the most critical,
highly stressed areas of the engine, and once your engine is no longer
green (50,000 miles), switch to 0W-40 or 15W-50.

All of the above are found in Nines articles.

thanks

Jae
