Green-engine is a term used by engineers in the auto world to define a "new" engine that has not been fully broken-in.

I agree that 0W/5W/10W-30 MOBIL 1, and/or AMSOIL will make the engines oulast those who write about must use 0W-40/50/60/ what-have-you synthetic viscosities.

But what do I know? The only place I can think to drive over 100 mph legally in the USA is Montana, and I'm only 3,000 miles away from there. So 5W-50 Rally formula Mobil 1, which is not even sold in this country is not for my driving application.

APPLICATION !!

Yes, there's the key word. What is your application ? Towing a trailer ? Heavy loads in the mountains ? Zoooooming down the AUTOBAHN ? Live in South Florida, Southern California, Death Valley, Phoenix, AZ. ? Then certainly, that APPLICATION would be to 15W-50/(similar viscosities) by necessity.

Not in Michigan ? Really ? Heck ,the potholes here would clean your clock in the first quarter mile alone.

I agree with Dick. 0W/5W/heck even 10W-30 full synthetic AMSOIL/MOBIL 1 changed at 5,000 miles, heck even 10,000 miles ( which is what SAAB suggests for normal driving--and you should follow these guidelines as a minimum, if your SAAB is under its manufacturer's warranty) will outlast all of you.

So, why is 0W-40 used in the car at manufacture then ?

Analysis:

Well, "giving birth" to a new car would be "EXTREME". And since SAAB has done away with the mandatory 1,000 mile oil change of the past, and since they do not know or are not able to control how their cars will be initially driven--they use and install the "extreme" recommendation 0W-40 at the factory.

But at the first oil change, they recommend 5W-30/0W-30/5W-40 as their basic recommendation.

But SAAB's basic and ongoing recommendation is still xW-30 viscosity oil for it's owners.

Don't feel compelled to use the "holy grail oil" of 0W-40 unless your applications ustify it.

And in closing, if 0W-40 was indeed recommended, then why do ALL SAAB DEALERS worldwide follow the (9-5 spec) of 5W-30 semi-synthetic ? And if this xW-30 oil was sooo bad for all of us, where are the hundreds of posts of blown engines on the NG900, 9-3 and 9-5 boards ? I haven't seen any evidence to support this new-found gotta-have oil.
