Viscosity modifiers break down.

Hi,
The following link says that viscosity modifiers cannot stand up to
high stress and their molecular structure will break down. So, a
5w-50 oil will over time lose almost all the added hot viscosity it gains
from viscosity modifiers.
Because synthetics need less viscosity modifiers than
fossil/mineral/dyno oil, 5w-50 oil is probably an excellent oil. However,
the range between cold and hot numbers for 5w-50 oil is greater than
those for 0w-40 and for 15w-50, especially considering the fact that
0w is really 5w at temperatures which are not arctic. So, you may
consider using 0w-40 or 15w-50 both of which are excellent oils and
meet ACEA A3/B3/B4.
Following is link which talks about effect of shear on Viscosity
Modifiers.
thanks
Jae
