If you use a good synthetic xW-30 from new, the engine will never, ever, get "green". Bearing wear will most likely still be within new specs at 50K or so. See the Mobil 1 writeup on use of 10W-30 in a BMW for over 1,000,000 miles.
If you want to use the heavier viscosity, go ahead. You will probably lose a bit of mileage, and you will gain at best an nth of additional protection.
