CAFE standard and BMW's wimpy engines.

Hi,
How do you counter John Lippis' accusation that sudden switch to 30
weight oil recommendation by Saab for model year 2000 was motivated by
desired to not pay hefty penalties for not meeting CAFE standards?
I understand that Amsoil 5w-30 meets ACEA A3, but so does Mobil 1 0w-40,
which is much easier to find. I just have to drive down to my local
Autozone or order from any number of web-sites.
John Lippis' assertion/accusation is compelling. Saab produces high
power automobiles which are extremely efficient for the amount of torque
generated, but Saab fleet just barely meets 27.5 mpg CAFE requirement
because Saab does not produce any econo-boxes.
So, for those of us in the know, we should use multi-grade 40 weight
or 50 weight, especially if we want to keep our 9-5s for a while.
I don't think BMWs are much of a comparison since their engines do
not produce nearly as much torque per cylinder as Saab engines. BMW
engines represent a much friendlier environment that Saab engines. That,
of course, does not include those poor quality 3.2L M3 engines. Those
things need 60 weight oils :-)
thanks
jae
