Dean ... what are your thoughts on ...

Hi Dean,
We are told that much of engine wear happens during initial crank when
engine oil is down in the sump. This may be true, but for a turbo engine
which produces a lot of torque, we may have to pay more attention to the
damage inflicted on bearings due to viscosity break-down of low viscosity
oils with high amounts of viscosity modifiers which do not stand up to
HTHS conditions as well as higher viscosity synthetic oils with less
viscosity modifiers.
So, this is perhaps where we should seriously consider Mobil 1 15w-50.
We are told that it does not flow as well initially, and we are reticent
to use this oil because the initial crank theory has been drilled into
our heads. However, initial crank does not produce a lot of torque.
If in turbo charged engines, which produce high torque, the amount of
bearing wear is more significant due to HTHS conditions,
perhaps Mobil 1 15w-50 should get equal time as Mobil 1 0w-40 since
15w-50 has higher viscosity and possibly less viscosity modifiers so that
it is measurable superior to 0w-40 in HTHS conditions. That is conjecture
of course unless and until someone comes up with a standard which is
above and beyond ACEA A3.
thanks
Jae
