That doesn't make a lot of sense. Posted by AdamB [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Yes it does., TG, Tue, 4 Feb 2003 07:12:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is directly from their website:
"Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM fully synthetic, detergent-dispersant oils are designed for passenger car and light truck gasoline or diesel engines requiring API Service SL, SJ or CF. Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, and 10W-30 also meet ILSAC GF-3 (Starburst Certification Mark).
Owners, especially with vehicles still under warranty, should always consult their owner's manual for the correct oil quality and viscosity grade recommended for their vehicle.
Depending on the viscosity grade, Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM motor oils meet or exceed the requirements of all major automobile manufacturers, including General Motors GM4718M and Daimler-Chrysler MS 9615. The Mobil 1 with SuperSynTM meets or exceeds the more demanding European ACEA requirements"
So you see, even the inferior 10W-30 is API SL and ILSAC GF-3. According to your argumentation the 10W-30 should then be better than the European 0W-40. LOL, give me a break.
Also notice the last line: "the more demanding European ACEA requirements."
If there is a difference between the US and Euro 0W-40 then why are the ACEA ratings exactly the same?! And if there is a difference does it have any impact on performance whatsoever?
As for your statements that the US market drives the lubrication business, that's just not correct. Europe has a much higher demand for high performance car oil than the States, because of the much longer drain intervals used here. Mobil 1 0W-40 has been on the European market for ~5 years, and it only recently appeared on the US market. It's quite funny that Mobil 1 US also calls their 0W-40 "European car formula".
I read the post by Stephen Goldberger, and nowhere did he say that API SL is superior to ACEA A3/B3/B4. He says you should use ACEA A3/B3 oil and that SL is just an alternate Saab spec.
BTW if there is a difference between the US and Euro 0W-40, it might be that the Euro use the Tri-Synth formula and the US is SyperSyn. I've heard rumors that Tri-Synth is actually superior to SuperSyn, but I don't know if that's true. Anyway, I will continue to buy oil that has a high ACEA rating, not API or ILSAC.
